Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek -λυτος, λυτός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -λυτος, combining form (in e.g. εὐδιάλυτος : see eudialyte n.) of λυτός that may be dissolved, soluble < λύειν to loose (see lysis n.) + -τός, suffix forming verbal adjectives. Compare French -lyte, German -lit.Formations are found from the first half of the 19th cent., in early use chiefly after electrolyte n.
