Etymology: < wire n.1 + pull v., after to pull the wires at wire n.1 5b.
transitive. To manipulate or influence (a person) as if pulling the wires of a puppet; to control (a situation, organization, etc.) from behind the scenes. Cf. to pull the wires at wire n.1 5b, to pull the strings at string n. 1i, and wirework v.Frequently in political contexts.In quot. 1780 as part of an extended metaphor; cf. puppet n. 3c.
