单词 winteran
释义

Winteranadj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Winteranus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Winteranus (in Winteranus cortex Winter's bark ( C. Clusius Aliquot Notae in Garciae Aromatum Historiam (1582) 30), also as cortex Winteranus (1623 or earlier)) < the name of Captain John Winter (see Winter's bark n.) + classical Latin -ānus -an suffix. Compare earlier Winter's bark n.In his account of the bark and its discovery, Clusius erroneously recorded John Winter's forename as William (Wilhelmus Winterus), an error repeated in many subsequent accounts. In the following isolated earlier example, the Latin adjective is apparently understood as a name:1651 J. French Art Distillation ii. 58 Of the bark of Winteran half a pound.
Obsolete.
attributive, in Winteran bark: Winter's bark (see Winter's bark n.).
