Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Cree. Partly a borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymons: Cree wīhtikōw; Ojibwa wiindigoo.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Cree wīhtikōw, and partly (in β. forms) < its cognate Ojibwa wiindigoo, further etymology unknown.The plural form weendegoag at β. forms reflects the Ojibwa animate plural. The form wendigo was popularized by the British writer Algernon Blackwood (compare quot. 1910) and has become common in literary use, typically in contexts that are not directly related to Algonquian tradition.
Among Algonquian peoples of Canada and the northern United States: a cannibalistic giant or spirit of folklore; (also) a person who consumes human flesh.
