Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -adelphia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin -adelphia (in e.g. Diadelphia Diadelphia n., Monadelphia Monadelphia n., Polyadelphia Polyadelphia n.) < Hellenistic Greek -αδελϕία , combining form (in e.g. ϕιλαδελϕία brotherly love: see philadelphian adj.1) < ancient Greek ἀδελϕός brother (see adelphous adj.) + -ία -ia suffix1.Found in a small number of borrowings in the 18th cent.
Botany.
(Not productive in English.) Occurring in the names of Linnaean classes of plants which have the stamens united by their filaments into a number of bundles specified by the first element, as Diadelphia n., Monadelphia n., Polyadelphia n., etc.
