Origin: A borrowing from Meskwaki. Etymon: Meskwaki wînepyêkôha.
Etymology: < Meskwaki wînepyêkôha, lit. ‘person of dirty water’, with reference to the muddy waters of the Fox River below Lake Winnebago, which became clogged with dead fish in the heat of the summer.The self-designation of the people in their own language is Ho-Chunk Hoocąk , Hōcąk (see Ho-Chunk adj.).
