单词 willock
释义

willockn.

Brit. /ˈwɪlək/, U.S. /ˈwɪlək/
Forms: 1600s twillock, 1600s willick, 1600s– willock.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Will , -ock suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Will, pet form of the male forename William (see Will n.4) + -ock suffix (although this does not account for the early form twillock, unless this simply shows an error); if so, the name is probably imitative in origin, after the high-pitched call of the juveline. Compare guillemot n., guillem n., and also willy n.2 1.
Now historical and rare.
Any of several auks; esp. a guillemot.
