Etymology: < Middle French, French †béarnois, French béarnais (noun) native or inhabitant of Béarn, a region (and former province) of south-western France (1465 as byernois ), the dialect of Gascon spoken in Béarn (1612 in the passage translated in quot. 1612 at sense A. 2, or earlier), (adjective) of or relating to Béarn, its inhabitants, or its dialect (1569) < post-classical Latin Benarnensis , noun (c400) and adjective (7th cent.) < Beneharnum (late 3rd cent.), Benarnus (6th cent.), the name of Béarn + classical Latin -ēnsis -ese suffix.The use as an epithet of Henry IV of France (compare quots. 1598, 1844 at sense A. 1) is after Middle French, French †le Béarnois, French le Béarnais (1598 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at sense A. 1, or earlier). In the forms Béarnese, Bearnese probably remodelled after -ese suffix. In the form Biarnese after Occitan (Gascon) biarnese.
