Etymology: < will n.1 + -s suffix1. Compare self-willes adv. and Old English unwilles (see unwill n.1 1). With use as adverb compare use of will n.1 in adverbial genitive phrases with possessive; see will n.1 Phrases 1a. Compare i-waldes adv. and Old English þances (see thank n. 2b), both of similar formation and meaning. With the predicative use compare will n.1 Phrases 1b.
