The form weig- is represented by Old English wígan to fight, Old Saxon, Old Frisian wîgand , Old High German wîgant , present participle used as noun, warrior, Old Norse vígr brave in war, neuter vígt wight adj.; waig- by Old English wǽgan, Old High German weigen (:*waigjan) to afflict, Old Norse veig strength, strong drink, drinking glass (compare Old Saxon wêgi, Old English wǽge cup); wig- by Old English wiga warrior, Gothic wigana dative singular, waihjô battle. The Indo-European wῑk- is represented by Latin vincere, perfect tense vīcī to conquer, Old Irish fichim to fight.
Obsolete.
Battle, conflict; transferred a military force or troop. Also attributive as in wi-ax, a battle-axe.
