Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin bustuarius burner of dead bodies, cremator (4th cent.), use as noun of masculine of classical Latin būstuārius (see below); as adjective < classical Latin būstuārius connected with, or frequenting, tombs < būstum funeral pyre, tomb (see bustal adj.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French, French †bustuaire, adjective (1552 in Rabelais, or earlier).
