单词 admeasurement
释义

admeasurementn.

Brit. /adˈmɛʒəm(ə)nt/, U.S. /ædˈmɛʒərm(ə)nt/
Forms: early Middle English amesurement, 1500s admysurement, 1500s– admeasurement.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French admesurement ; admeasure v., -ment suffix.
Etymology: Originally (i) < Anglo-Norman admesurement, amesurement measuring and assessment of dower, pasture, etc. (a1292 or earlier; compare Middle French amesurement moderation (c1255 in Old French); < amesurer , admesurer admeasure v. + -ment -ment suffix));. In later use directly (ii) < admeasure v. + -ment suffix. Compare post-classical Latin amensuramentum (1203 in amensuramentum dotis : see admeasurement of dower at sense 1). Compare also Anglo-Norman amesure , amesurance , admensuratione all in sense ‘admeasurement’ (all a1295 or earlier; compare admensuration n.).
1. Chiefly Law. The ascertainment and apportionment of just shares in something, as in an inheritance or common land; a writ ordering that this be done (esp. in admeasurement of dower, admeasurement of pasture). Also more generally: apportionment, allocation. Cf. measurement n. 1.
