Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French vidrecome.

Etymology: Apparently < French vidrecome, kind of drinking vessel (1685 as vidrecum ; now historical), itself apparently irregularly < German wiederkommen to come back, return < wieder (adverb) back, again (see wither adj.) + kommen come v. The α. forms (which predominate in English) are modelled on the presumed underlying German verb. No corresponding noun is attested in German.Compare German †Willkomm kind of drinking vessel, typically used ceremonially to welcome a guest (16th cent., now historical; specific use of Willkomm welcome n.²), and compare also French †velcome (19th cent. in dictionaries as a synonym of vidrecome).

Chiefly (and now only) in historical contexts. Now rare.
