a. Designating an optical instrument having a wide field of view; esp. (a) a microscope in which the whole of the sample is illuminated (often as contrasted with a microscope in which an image is obtained by scanning); (b) an astronomical camera capable of producing detailed images covering a wide field of view, typically being sensitive enough to produce images of even faint celestial objects.
