单词 whitlow
释义

whitlown.

Brit. /ˈwɪtləʊ/, U.S. /ˈ(h)wɪtloʊ/
Forms: α. Middle English–1600s whitflawe, Middle English whytflowe, Middle English–1500s whitflowe, 1500s whyte flaw, white flaw, 1500s–1600s whiteflaw(e, 1600s–1700s whit(-)flaw, whit(-)flow, (1700s dialect whick-, 1700s–1800s quickflaw). β. Middle English whytlowe, whyte low, 1500s whitlowe, 1600s whitelow, ( whitloaf), 1600s–1800s whitloe, 1500s– whitlow. γ. 1500s whytblow, whitblowe, ( whetblowe), whiteblowe, 1500s–1600s whitblow.
Etymology: apparently originally whitflaw , -flow = white adj. and n. + flaw n.1 (see sense 4b); but the similarity of the first syllable to early modern Dutch vijt, fijt, Low German fît ‘whitlow’ is remarkable and suggests the possibility of alien origin. The alterations to whitblow, whitlow are difficult to account for. The supposition that the original form was whick-flaw, dialect variant of quickflaw (Skeat), is not supported by the evidence.
A suppurative inflammatory sore or swelling in a finger or thumb, usually in the terminal joint; = paronychia n. 1 (cf. panaritium n.).
