Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymons: Irish a Mhuire, is trua.
Etymology: < Irish a Mhuire, is trua (interjection) alas, what a pity < a Mhuire , vocative of the name of the Virgin Mary (see wirra int.) + is , copula (see be v.) + trua pity, use as noun of trua miserable, pitiful (formerly truagh ; Early Irish trúag , tróg ), cognate with Welsh †tru wretched, miserable (compare Welsh truan wretch: compare truant n.), Gaulish trougo- (in personal names). Compare slightly earlier wirra int.The forms with -th- in English reflect the (dental) quality of the -t- in Irish.
Irish English (chiefly in representations of Irish English speech). Now rare.
