[The underlying story is primarily that of Madog, the legendary son of the historical Owain Gwynedd (d. 1170). There is medieval evidence of tales of Madog as a seafarer; he is first referred to as discoverer of America by John Dee in 1580. His story was associated with D. Ingram's claim (originally published in 1583) that he had heard Welsh words in North America.
