Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French buglose; Latin buglossa; Latin būglōssos.
Etymology: Probably partly < (i) Old French, Middle French buglose (13th cent.), Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French buglosse (c1300; French buglosse ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin buglossa (from 14th cent. in British sources; also 5th cent. as buglosa ), variant of classical Latin būglōssos ; and partly (iii) directly < classical Latin būglōssos (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek βούγλωσσος (Dioscorides) < ancient Greek βοῦς ox (see Bucephalus n.) + γλῶσσα tongue (see gloss n.1), so called from the shape and roughness of the leaves. Compare ox-tongue n. and langue de boeuf n. 2.
Any of several hairy herbaceous plants of the family Boraginaceae, typically with blue flowers, esp. those of the genera Anchusa (as the small annual A. arvensis of Europe) and Echium (see viper's bugloss n. at viper n. Compounds 2b). Formerly also: †the bristly ox-tongue, Helminthotheca echioides (obsolete).dyer's, sea, small, wall bugloss, etc.: see the first element.
