Also: any of several other plants of the family Apiaceae ( Umbelliferae) having similar properties or appearance; spec. (a) (in full English masterwort, wild masterwort) goutweed, Aegopodium podagraria (now rare); (b) (formerly more fully black masterwort) any of various plants of the genus Astrantia, esp. A. major, often grown for ornament; (c) either of two North American plants, a wild angelica, Angelica atropurpurea (also American masterwort), and the cow parsnip of North America, Heracleum sphondylium subsp. montanum ( H. lanatum).The identity of the plant referred to in quot. 1523 is uncertain.
