单词 wigeon
释义

wigeonn.

Brit. /ˈwɪdʒ(ᵻ)n/, U.S. /ˈwɪdʒ(ə)n/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, wigeons.
Forms: 1500s wegion, 1500s wegionnes (plural), 1500s wegyon, 1500s wygeon, 1500s–1600s widgen, 1500s–1600s widgin, 1500s–1600s wigen, 1500s–1600s wigion, 1500s– wigeon, 1600s widgeing, 1600s widgine, 1600s widging, 1600s widgion, 1600s widgon, 1600s– widgeon.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Origin uncertain.Perhaps ultimately of imitative origin (compare whew n.1, whewer n.), perhaps with an arbitrary extension. The form appears to suggest a French origin (compare pigeon n.), but French forms are first attested significantly later than the English word: compare †vigeon kind of West Indian duck (1667), †vingeon kind of duck observed in Madagascar (1690), kind of West Indian duck (1767 or earlier), Eurasian wigeon (Buffon 1783, also as †gingeon ), American wigeon (J. Latham 1785), and it is even possible that the French word was borrowed < English. It has also been suggested that French †vigeon is a direct descendant of an assumed classical Latin *vīpiō kind of crane (attributed to Pliny), with the phonological development seen in pigeon n., although the attested classical Latin form is vibiō (with variant readings viviō , bibiō ; attested only in Pliny; of unknown origin). Compare ( < Latin) Italian bibbio kind of crane (a1562 with direct reference to Pliny), also Italian regional (Tuscany and northern) bibbio , bibbo Eurasian wigeon (also in central Italy in sense ‘seagull’). With sense 2 compare earlier wigeon v.
