Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: bugger n.1, -y suffix3; French bouguerie, bougrerie.
Etymology: Partly (i) < bugger n.1 + -y suffix3; compare -ery suffix, and partly (ii) < Anglo-Norman bugerye (c1400) and Middle French bouguerie, bouguerrie, bougrie (all 1st half of the 14th cent.), variants of Old French, Middle French bogrerie, bougrerie (French bougrerie ) heresy, anal intercourse, bestiality (13th cent.) < bougre bugger n.1 + -erie -ery suffix.Compare the following isolated attestation of the form bugrery , probably either reflecting Middle French bougrerie or a parallel formation < bugger n.1 and -ery suffix:1551 J. Bale Actes Eng. Votaryes: 2nd Pt. f. lxiii Se how thys most shamefull matter of bugrery is vntowardly tossed and conuayed here of these beastly buggerers, the complayners therof fynely lawhed to scorne. In use as adjective probably reinforced by association with adjectives in -y suffix1. A. Hoppe Eng.-Deutsches Suppl.-Lex. (1871) cites the following as evidence for adjectival use, but bloody is more probably the intended term:1851 H. Mayhew London Labour I. 21/2 A b-—y fool, why don't he let people go to h--l their own way?

2. Originally: the act of anal intercourse between two men or between a man and a woman, or of sexual intercourse between a person and an animal, regarded as illicit or illegal. Now also: anal intercourse. Cf. sodomy n., bestiality n. 3.The precise definition and application of the term in Criminal Law has varied over time. It has been used less commonly in legislation since the mid to late 20th century following liberalization of laws relating to homosexuality, and in legal contexts now typically refers to rape involving anal penetration (especially of minors). Sodomy is the more usual term in U.S. use. When used to refer to lawful anal intercourse now generally considered offensive but also somewhat archaic; sometimes employed ironically (as e.g. in quot. 2003).
