Etymology: Arabic-Persian barq-andāz lightning-darter. N.E.D. (1888) enters this under the double headword burkundaz, -auze and gives the pronunciation as (bɒ̄·ɹkăndǭ:z) /ˈbɜːkənˌdɔːz/.
‘A matchlock man, but commonly applied to a native of Hindustan, armed with a sword and shield, who acts as doorkeeper, watchman, guard, or escort’ (H. H. Wilson Gloss. Judicial Terms).
