Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Westmark.
Etymology: < German Westmark (1948) < West west n.1 + Mark mark n.2 (compare mark n.2 2c), so called informally in order to distinguish the West German currency from the East German currency informally called the Ostmark (see Ostmark n.).
Now historical.
The Deutschmark, the currency unit (1948–90) of West Germany, as distinguished from the Ostmark of East Germany. Cf. Ostmark n.From 1990 the West German Deutschmark was adopted throughout the reunified country.
