单词 westlooker
释义

westlookern.

Brit. /ˈwɛstˌlʊkə/, U.S. /ˈwɛstˌlʊkər/
Forms: early Middle English westlokere, late Middle English westeloker, late Middle English westloker, 1900s– westlooker.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: west adv., looker n.
Etymology: Apparently < west adv. + looker n.As applied to the hare, it is not clear whether the term might allude to the animal's ability to see behind itself (compare west adv. 2) or to see in two directions at once (through having its eyes set on the side of its head: compare side-looker n.), or to the popular supposition that it had poor sight (perhaps because at the approach of danger it remains still until the last moment). Compare side-looker n., waldeneie n., and see discussion by M. Laing in Medium Ævum (1998) 67 201–11.
