单词 well-made play
释义

well-made play
b. Of a play, novel, etc.: written in a formulaic manner which aims at neatness of plot and foregrounding of dramatic incident rather than naturalism, depth of characterization, intellectual substance, etc. Esp. in well-made play. Now chiefly historical. [Apparently after French pièce bien faite (1749 or earlier in this sense). Quot. 1881 is from a newspaper article based on, and citing in translation, Zola's Le roman expérimental (1880); Zola does not use pièce bien faite in that work, although it does occur e.g. in his Le naturalisme au théâtre (1881).]
