Etymology: < German Bummel stroll, wander (late 19th cent.) < bummeln bummel v. Compare bummel v. and earlier bummer n.3 O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives the pronunciation as (bu·mĕl, bɒ·mĕl) /ˈbʊməl/, /ˈbʌməl/.
A leisurely stroll or journey; a wander, a saunter. Also figurative.

Etymology: < German bummeln to stroll, wander, to laze, loaf (18th cent.; 17th cent. of a bell in sense ‘to swing, ring’) < an imitative base seen also in †bummen to ring, sound, resound (see boom v.1). Compare bummel n. and earlier bummer n.3Compare the following earlier instance of the German verb in an English linguistic context:1891 Pall Mall Gaz. 29 Aug. 3/2 We do not ‘bummeln’ so much or so thoroughly as the Germans.
