Etymology: < Welsh adj. + -ry suffix. Compare post-classical Latin Walecheria , Walescaria , Walescheria , Gwalescheria , etc. (frequently from 1250 in British sources), Anglo-Norman Walescherie , Walesserye , Galecherie , etc. (1293 or earlier), both in sense ‘area of linguistically and culturally Welsh settlement’. With sense 2 compare Englishry n. 1b. With sense 3 compare earlier Welshness n.

Opposed to Englishry n. 1b.This division is often used to distinguish the Welsh-speaking parts of northern Pembrokeshire from the southern anglophone parts (sometimes referred to as Little England beyond Wales at Little England n. 1b), and is also used in the Gower peninsula.
