Suggestions that the word is ultimately derived either < Arabic baġla ‘she-mule’ or < Portuguese baixel vessel n.1 cannot be substantiated; Arabic baġla, denoting this type of sailing vessel, is apparently first attested in 19th-cent. accounts by European travellers, and probably reflects folk-etymological association of a loanword < an Indian language with Arabic baġla she-mule. English forms with final -o may have arisen by association with budgerow n.
