单词 bugeye
释义

bugeyen.

Brit. /ˈbʌɡˌʌɪ/, U.S. /ˈbəɡˌaɪ/
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bug n.2, eye n.1
Etymology: Apparently < bug n.2 + eye n.1, perhaps as an alteration of buckeye n. (compare buckeye n. 4), although the relative priority of the two nouns in this sense is uncertain. Perhaps compare bug-eyed adj.Apparently motivated or reinforced by a supposed resemblance of two holes bored in the front of the vessel to hold cables to the eyes of an animal or insect: compare bug-eyes n., and also quot. 1885 at buckeye n. 4. A connection ultimately with buckie n. (i.e. ‘oyster boat’) has also been suggested.
U.S. Now chiefly historical.
A type of sailing boat used mainly for oyster fishing in the Chesapeake Bay area, typically having a centreboard and two masts. Cf. buckeye n. 4.Boats of this type were common in the late 19th cent. but in the early 20th cent. were largely superseded by the smaller skipjack (skipjack n. 6).
