单词 | -logic |
释义 | -logiccomb. form ending originally occurring in adaptations (through French and Latin) of Greek adjectives in -λογικός, derived from adjectives and nouns in -λογος, -λογον, which have derivative nouns of quality or function in -λογία, represented in English by -logy comb. form. As the meaning of an adjective in -logic or -logical (see -logical comb. form) may with substantial correctness be rendered by ‘pertaining to ——logy’, such adjectives are commonly apprehended as derivatives of the related nouns (as if < ——logy + -ic suffix or -ical suffix). In general, the existence of a noun in -logy now implies the potential existence of a correlative adjective in -logical (the exceptions being confined to a few of the older words, such as apology, which have corresponding adjectives of different formation). For the difference in meaning between adjectives in -logic and the (now much more frequent) adjectives in -logical, see -ical suffix, and cf. the note under geologic adj. 1.
