A mechanism for raising, conveying, or distributing water.The waterwork referred to in quot. 1596 and several 17th-cent. quots. was a high building erected near Queenhithe in the City of London in 1593–5 by Sir Bevis Bulmer (d. 1613), containing a pump ‘to conuey Thames water into mens houses of west Cheape, about Powles, Fleetestreete &c.’ ( J.
