Etymology: < water n. + melon n.1 The fruit is so called on account of its abundant watery juice.
The large edible fruit of a trailing gourd plant, Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus (family Cucurbitaceae), having a green rind and sweet, very juicy flesh that is typically red or pink in colour. Also: the plant itself, which is native to southern Africa and widely grown in warmer parts of the world.
