Etymology: Probably < an unattested Chinese compound (probably denoting the material) < huáng (Cantonese wòhng) yellow + an unidentified second element.

A yellow knobbed cane made from the stem of any of several Chinese and Japanese bamboos of the genus Phyllostachys, esp. P. nigra; (also) the material of which these stems are made, which has also been used to make umbrella handles, tobacco pipes, etc. Also more fully whangee cane.Also occasionally used of the plant itself.
