Etymology: < water n. + leader n.1The Middle English forms waterlader , waterladere (see quots. ?a1221, ?c1250 at sense 1) show (in the stem vowel of the second element) the typical south-east midland development of Old English ǣ to ā . The surname Willelmus Waterladar' (1197, Warwickshire) is probably more likely to show a parallel formation in loader n.1, in view of its provenance.
1. A person who sells water from a cart. Cf. leader n.1 1d. Now historical and rare.Recorded earliest as a surname.In later use with reference to participants in the York mystery plays; cf. quot. a1450.
