Etymology: < Afrikaans waterblommetjie, literally ‘little water flower’ (1880 as waterblommetje ) < water water n. + blommetjie little flower (see aandblommetjie n.).
South African.
The water hawthorn, Aponogeton distachyos (family Potamogetonaceae), an aquatic plant with scented white flowers and oval floating leaves, native to South Africa where its buds and flowers are used in cooking.
