Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch waterzootje.
Etymology: < Dutch waterzootje (1698 or earlier) < waterzooi (see waterzooi n.) + -tje, diminutive suffix.In forms with final and -ée (which appear in the 19th cent.) apparently by association with French words ending in (see -y suffix5 2); compare other cookery terms of French origin, e.g. purée n., pâté n.3 2, réchauffé n. In form water-souchet at δ. forms perhaps after nouns of French origin ending in -et (compare -et suffix1). In γ. forms perhaps influenced by soak v.
