Etymology: < scientific Latin -locularis (1720 or earlier in physiological and botanical use, in e.g. bilocularis bilocular adj., trilocularis trilocular adj., etc.) < classical Latin loculus loculus n. + -āris -ar suffix¹. Compare post-classical Latin locularis of or relating to space (5th cent.). Compare locular adj.Attested from the first half of the 18th cent. in a number of Latin loans with a numeral as first element, e.g. trilocular adj., bilocular adj., unilocular adj. Formations within English are found from at least the late 19th cent.
