Etymology: < water n. + leaf n.1In sense 2, after French feuille d'eau (1752 or earlier in this sense) or its model post-classical Latin Hydrophyllum ( P. Morin Remarques nécessaires pour la culture des fleurs (1638) 40, as Hydrophyllon).
1. A representation of the leaf of an aquatic plant. In later use chiefly: (Architecture) a carved representation of this kind, typically used to ornament sculptured capitals.
