单词 water-bearer
释义

water-bearern.

Brit. /ˈwɔːtəˌbɛːrə/, U.S. /ˈwɔdərˌbɛrər/, /ˈwɑdərˌbɛrər/
Forms: see water n. and bearer n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., bearer n.
Etymology: < water n. + bearer n. Compare waterleader n.In sense 2 translating classical Latin aquārius Aquarius n. Also attested early as a surname (in sense 1): Ric. Waterberere (1381). In Old English attested only in a related group of glosses rendering classical Latin lixa sutler, camp follower (see lix n.), apparently reflecting folk-etymological association of that word with (etymologically unrelated) post-classical Latin lixa water, lye (see lixivium n.), a connection already made in Nonius Marcellus (perhaps 4th cent.), where lixa in the latter sense is first attested. Compare also (rare) Old English wæterberend ( < water n. + Old English berend ( < bear v.1 + -end suffix1)), attested in the same context:OE Aldhelm Glosses (Brussels 1650) in L. Goossens Old Eng. Glosses of MS Brussels, Royal Libr. 1650 (1974) 209 Lixarum : qui aquam portant, mercennariorum, wæterberendra. All of the Old English glosses ultimately derive from the phrase cum lixarum coetibus ‘with throngs of camp followers’ in Aldhelm De laude virginitatis 13.
1. A person who carries water; spec. one employed to carry water from a spring, well, river, etc., for domestic use.For discussion of the Old English quots. see note in etymology.
