Etymology: < web n. + beam n.1 Compare early modern Dutch webboom (16th cent.), Old High German webbiboum (Middle High German weppeboum , German Webebaum , now rare) and also (with a related first element: Middle Dutch weven weave v.1) Middle Dutch weveboom (Dutch weefboom).In early use frequently translating post-classical Latin liciatorium (see discussion at heavel n. and compare the Latin gloss in quot. a1425). In quot. OE1 translating the nominative plural of post-classical Latin insubulus weaver's beam, treadle, spindle (ultimately reflecting Isidore Origines 19. 29. 1).
