Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., tree n.
Etymology: < water n. + tree n. Compare German Wasserbaum a tree which grows near water (1580).With use with reference to the African plant (compare quot. 1831 at sense 2) compare Krio watatik ( < wata water n. + tik stick, tree); compare also German Wasserbaum (mid 19th cent. in this sense).
1. A tree which grows near water or in watery ground. Obsolete.
