Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., spider n.
Etymology: < water n. + spider n. Compare Middle Dutch waterspinne (Dutch waterspin), Middle Low German waterspinne, German Wasserspinne (15th cent.).In quot. 1547 translating Welsh gafr y dŵr , lit. ‘water goat’ (1547 in the passage cited, rare); compare Old English wætergāt (see waterbuck n. 1).
1. Any of various long-legged insects found floating or moving swiftly on the surface film of water, such as a crane fly or pond skater. Now colloquial.
