Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: wan- prefix, trust n.
Etymology: < wan- prefix + trust n., perhaps after Middle Dutch wantroost distrust, despair (early modern Dutch wantroost despair). Compare earlier untrust n. and wantruth n. Compare also wantrow v. and the variant reading for quot. ?a1425 at that entry.
Now archaic and rare.
