Etymology: Of uncertain origin. The word most probably belongs to one of the languages of the Isthmus of Panama, but it may possibly be a corruption of the West Indian synonym javaris (Rochefort, 1658), which seems to be a mispronunciation of Spanish jabalí wild boar.
