Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bum n.1, bailiff n.
Etymology: Apparently < bum n.1 + bailiff n. as a term of contempt, perhaps alluding to the reputation of such officials for using physical force, and specifically to giving the debtor a shove in the behind or catching him or her from behind. Compare French pousse-cul assistant to a bailiff employed to apprehend debtors by force (1657; lit. ‘push arse’), and also:1654 E. Gayton Pleasant Notes Don Quixot ii. ii. 38 Constables, Tithing-men, Bayliffs, bumme or shoulder-Marshals, and the like dreadfull appearances, which make stop of suspicious persons. Compare in the same sense also bum-trap n. at bum n.1 and int.2 Compounds 2, bum-bailey n.

A bailiff empowered to execute writs and warrants, esp. to collect debts or arrest debtors for non-payment. Cf. bailiff n. 2, bum-bailey n.
