Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bum n.1, bailie n.
Etymology: Apparently < bum n.1 + bailie n. as a term of contempt, perhaps with allusion to the reputation of such officials for using physical force. Compare earlier bum-bailiff n. and see discussion at that entry.
derogatory. Now rare (English regional in later use).
A bailiff empowered to execute writs and warrants, esp. to collect debts or arrest debtors for non-payment; = bum-bailiff n. Cf. bailie n. 3.The word is recorded in H. Orton Phonol. S. Durham Dial. (1933) §280.
