Etymology: < water n. + hammer n.1
1. An evacuated tube partly filled with water, which when the tube is reversed falls to the other end with a noise like a hammer blow, used to illustrate the fact that in a vacuum liquids and solids fall at the same rate. Now chiefly historical.
