Etymology: < water n. + dragon n.1With sense 2a compare Dutch waterdraak crocodile (second half of the 16th cent.; now regional and rare), German Wasserdrache crocodile (15th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation in a glossary), mythical water monster (first half of the 16th cent.).
1. Either of two aquatic plants with a spikelike inflorescence: (in early use) wild calla or bog arum, Calla palustris (family Araceae) (now rare); (now, chiefly North American) lizard's tail, Saururus cernuus (family Saururaceae).
