Etymology: < water n. + dog n.1With sense 1 compare German Wasserhund dog trained to retrieve waterfowl (16th cent.). With some of the regional uses with reference to otters in sense 3a compare Welsh dyfrgi (13th cent.; < dyfr- , combining form of dwfr , dwr water + -gi , combining form of ci dog: see morgy n.), Old Cornish doferghi , and the similarly-formed Irish dobharchú and Scottish Gaelic dobharchú (Early Irish doburchú ); compare also Irish mada uisce (1643 as madaidh uisge , plural; < madadh dog + uisce water: see usquebaugh n.). With use with reference to salamanders in sense 3c compare water-puppy n. at water n. Compounds 8c.
