Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese budō.
Etymology: < Japanese budō system of fighting skills (c1220 as butau , budau ), warrior ethos (late 14th cent. in same sense as bushido n.; 1603 as butǒ in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), martial arts collectively < bu- military ( < Middle Chinese: see martial art n.) + -dō way, spiritual discipline ( < the Middle Chinese base of Chinese dào tao n.; compare judo n.). Compare earlier bushido n. and the following:1867 J. C. Hepburn Japanese-Eng. Dict. (at cited word) Bu-dō (Samurai no michi), Military sciences.
Martial Arts.
The ethos underlying the study and practice of Japanese martial arts; the spiritual development central to and resulting from (training in) these arts; the traditional code on which they are based. Hence (with singular or plural agreement): Japanese martial arts collectively. Cf. bushido n.
